Following numerous research, marine omega-3 products have become increasingly popular over the last 20 years. From the total fatty acids contained in fish oil, most interest is concentrated in two fatty acids viz. docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), the two most popular marine omega-3 molecules. Most commercial marine omega-3 products contain varying amounts of DHA and EPA. Typically, 30% or at the most 40-50% of the fish oil content of a commercial softgel are omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and/or DHA) and the remaining fat (ie. 70%, 60% or 50% of the softgel), is
non omega-3 fat without any added value to humans ('empty fat').
